E. O'Dwyer's |
Returning back into Limerick (known affectionately as ‘stab city’)
we headed south-west on the road to Tipperary. It was about 22:00
and we were all exhausted both by the long day behind us and the prospect
of two more pints before closing time.
Pallas Green,
our agreed stop in Limerick, was the last village before the border
with Tipperary. It was an odd little place with lots of couples
just randomly walking across the road in different directions and
it soon became apparent that they, like us, were looking for a pub
that was open. Chaser Fitzgerald’s attracted our thirsty eyes, but
it was shut so we settled for O’Dwyer’s across the road.
The bar was packed to the rafters with young an
old alike and we squeezed ourselves down to the back lounge where
they were showing an RTE drama on a giant plasma screen. Hon noticed
that his usually bubbly Bulmers was flatter than a steamrolled badger
and soon discovered that the bottle was best before 2004! Utilising
his consumer rights he returned to the barman and demanded a new
bottle. He was immediately furnished with an apology and replacement
bottle – which was only two months out of date. Time was at a premium
now and Hon was forced to drink the vintage cider. The twenty minutes
elapsed and we raced back to the car to set-off for our final pint
of the day.

Would
we go back?
Solid south-west Guinness, but very strange pub |
Best
Moment
Hon shrugging his shoulders and saying, ‘I suppose
two months out of date is an improvement on two years’, before
downing his drink like a true alcoholic
