As the night rapidly descended upon us we reached our final destination
for Day 2, Edenderry, which was chosen because of Brian’s family
connections. Armed with his supposed 'extensive knowledge' of the
area it only took us 40 minutes to find his cousins' house where
we were to be put up for the night. Amazingly there was going to
be a bed for all of us - albeit sharing, but then when you’re bunched
up in a vehicle all day why break the habit of a weekend?
Finbar
Cullen himself, former captain of Offaly's senior football team,
greeted us warmly in the pub. Brian’s grandad 'Darkie' - the local
legend who reputedly dug the Edenderry canal with his arms from
St James Gate in Dublin and made it flow with Guinness until health
and safety shut it down - was also there to welcome us with open
arms and jars of black. Top marks go to Cullens for craic - the
people were great, stout was solid and the darts in the front bar
made you feel like you’d been drinking there for years.
Boris
mysteriously disappeared for most of the night. He later claimed
to have both visited a pub called Byrnes' (where the music was supposedly
better and the Guinness tastier than Cullen's) and seen a ghost.
We think he fell asleep in the chippy and dreamt it all.
